It would be nice if map controls were at least ignored when the mouse pointer is over a menu. I’ve accidentally zoomed out and in when I expected the scroll wheel to control a menu. I’ve ended up scrolling around the map when I only intended to scroll through the current building menu.

That said, the user interface could do with a little bit of improvement. But it’s a testament to how fun I find Valhalla Hills, that this need does not phase me. Sometimes, I need to launch the game several times before it’s playable. Sometimes trying to launch the game results in minimising to desktop, a hung loading screen, or the intro videos not playing. I’ve had a few problems with Valhalla Hills though. Valhalla Hills has addressed this with the ability to build shrines to offer up offerings to the Portal Guardians who block your path to the next island - as long as you haven’t already started a fight with them. Thus you’ll always be able to quickly know how many rabbits you need to hunt to get the next unlock, and so forth.Īs much as I loved The Settler’s IV, I’m not a huge fan of the fact that most games would always end in the inevitable need to battle your opponent. The status of these unlocks can be checked up on any time. For example, you unlock everything - be it a building type, map size, terrain style, wild animal, or mob difficulty increase - through playing the game. There are some interesting additions to the formula. On the contrary, it has taken the Settlers mould as a base and attempted to build on it. Valhalla Hills isn’t a carbon copy though. So I’m especially pleased that Valhalla Hills does a very good job of emulating the gameplay I first fell in love with in The Settlers IV. To this day, The Settlers IV still remains one of my all time favourite games.
